Uncertainty looms over the Tokyo Olympics 2020 in the wake of coronavirus pandemic as Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has begun to shift his messaging on the sporting extravaganza which is scheduled to start in July.
It is worth mentioning here that Abe, his cabinet, and the organisers were confident of hosting the event on time, however, the video conferencing of G7 leaders on March 16 might have triggered some “change in plans”.
Post the G7 leaders’ video conferencing, the Japanese Prime Minister is avoiding to comment on the future or the timing of the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

“I want to hold the Olympics and Paralympics in their complete form, as proof that the human race will conquer the new coronavirus, and I gained support for that from the G7 leaders,” The Japan Times reported quoting Abe.
It is worth mentioning here that in the wake of the virus outbreak, several sporting events across the globe have been called off or “postponed until further notice”, while some were also held in empty stadiums sans the crowd.
Events like these have raised serious doubts on the future of the Tokyo Olympics as well and questions are being raised as would it be safe to bring hundreds of thousands of athletes, officials and spectators together in Tokyo?
Amid the rising concerns of global safety, the President of the United States of America Donald Trump last week suggested that the Tokyo Olymp[ics 2020 should be pushed back by a year.
And if the Olympics is pushed back, then history would repeat itself.
Olympic Games were cancelled for the first time in 1944 during World War II and since then it has never been cancelled.
The future and the timing of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 will be clear in the near future and until a decision is made, we all can hope and expect that games would be organised on time.
