It has been 25 years since we heard “You’re a wizard, Harry”, and our lives have been changed forever. The Harry Potter film series is something through which we all have grown up.
From witnessing Howards for the first time and fantasizing over the magic world to standing in long queues to grab our favourite books, we all grew up.
Perhaps Harry Potter books are the first novels that we read as kids. Not only books but film adaptations also have a very special place in our hearts.
The madness and ecstasies of witnessing the wizarding world and dreaming to get into Hogwarts were unmatchable.
A heritage school with The Great Hall of Floating Candles, moving staircases, witchcraft and wizardry classes, endless feasts, glamourous balls, robes, and secret corridors, isn’t this a dream of every fantasy-loving child?
Harry Potter is not only immensely popular among kids, but it has intrigued adults too. The reason is that it is connected to our emotions.
When we say that it's not a movie it’s an emotion, that’s true for Harry Potter. But have you ever wondered what made Harry Potter so famous around the world?
Firstly, the major credit goes to JK Rowling for creating such a beautiful and magical world that is unreal in reality but feels so real.
The impeccable writing style of Rowling and the execution of it by the screenwriters, directors, and actors was a big success.
Every actor did justice to the role. There couldn’t be any better trio than Harry Ron and Hermione played by Daniel, Rupert, and Emma.
Harry Potter is a Bildungsroman novel showing excellent character development. We have witnessed Harry grow from a mere child known as ‘The boy who survived’ to a teenager battling Voldemort.
Not only Harry but every character learns to overcome their flaws and challenges to embrace who they are, even the anti-hero such as Draco.
"We've all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That's who we really are."
The intricate plot with suspense and mysteries is one of the foundations of its success.
Its expanding plot with numerous possibilities and much potential to explore the story has also given an edge to the writer to surprise the audience.
Perhaps the most important and relatable factor that appeals to the hearts of people is the relationships that have been shown.
Greater emphasis has been put on the portrayal of friendships, love, and the beauty of belongingness and unity.
Harry spent his initial life being outcasted in the muggle world, and found his real home and family in Hogwarts; the one who really loves and cares for him and most importantly helps him overcome the challenges.
And this chosen family proved to be his real strength while fighting Voldemort - “Something worth fighting for.”
Keeping the magic aside, the values that have been shown are intrinsically human qualities – trust, loyalty, bravery, and sacrifice.
It is perfectly depicted in the actions of the characters and their very nature. And this makes it to be relatable to human life.
Although not the wizarding world, the problems and personal conflicts of the characters shown are based on real life.
Moreover, Harry’s life is also an inspirational story. The readers have a sense of sympathy for him and this gives an emotional touch to the novel.
He did not let his harsh upbringing and tragic past stop him from living a full life at Hogwarts. Watching him persevere through so many adversities and finding joy in little moments is just as inspiring now as it was then.
It is a reminder to never give up hope. As Dumbledore rightly stated, "But you know, happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light,"
Although it did give us some emotional damage as a kid by killing our favourite characters, but also taught us to experience the real world and face the harsh realities of life, not forgetting to cherish the little moments of joy.
"It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live"
The spectacular setting and visuals of the movie were a chef’s kiss. The castle's elegant and unique design instantly enchanted us.
Special attention was paid to perfecting the minute details of the set such as over 350 real candles being used to depict the ceiling of floating candles.
Also, a surprising fact is that the owls were trained to carry letters. Such efforts to make a fictional world come into the picture were appreciable.
Harry Potter World offers alternate realities and stories that are far from the realities of life and give people an escape from their daily monotonous routine.
It embarks you on a different journey that is beyond imagination and intrigues people of every age group.
The emotional angle involved along with the wizarding world created a very captivating experience for the audience.
No doubt Harry Potter was a great series and was famous for almost an entire decade. But to date, it is still beloved because of the community it created.
The engagement and conversations started spreading to a large community. People were keen to know which house they would belong to, and a ground version of the Quidditch game was also invented.
People continued to reread and re-watch Harry Potter for years to dive into the nostalgia as it almost shaped an entire generation.
While some critics suggested that the fandom would die shortly after the series will end; it seems that Harry Potter has sparked a magical flame in young hearts and its popularity is ever-lasting.
And now with a web series in the works, the Harry Potter series is set to make its way into the hearts of the new generation; not to mention it’ll intrigue the older generations too for a re-watch.
So, at last, no matter how many years pass by, Harry Potter will always be close to our hearts. After all, it was a roller coaster ride of endless emotions; a journey of magic, love, and friendships.
It sure was a great experience of witnessing Hogwarts for the first time as a kid but we would continue to love the classic for decades to come. “After all this time?” “Always.”
