Amidst the ongoing dispute between Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad (TAIPA) and Srimanta Sankaradeva Sangha, several Ahom families have resigned from their membership in the Sangha.

As per reports, as many as seventeen Ahom families from Kakilaguri, Gohpur, have not only renounced their membership in the Sangha but have also abandoned its principles and ideologies.

The families have formally embraced the traditional Ahom Furulung faith. Dressed in traditional Ahom attire, they participated in religious ceremonies at Tai places of worship to mark their transition.

It is noteworthy that various Ahom organisations had previously called upon the Ahom community to sever ties with Srimanta Sankaradeva Sangha.

The controversy began when Chandra Baruah, a resident of Gohpur and a member of the Sangha, participated in the Me-Dam-Me-Phi festival.

Following this, the Sangha took disciplinary action against Baruah and imposed a fine of Rs 500. This decision triggered strong reactions from TAIPA, which responded by publicly burning the Sangha’s constitution, further escalating tensions between the two groups.

TAIPA demanded an apology from the Sangha for what they perceived as an insult to the Ahom community.

However, the Sangha refused to apologise. Instead, it lodged police complaints against TAIPA leaders for the act of burning the constitution. In response, TAIPA also filed a complaint against the Sangha, deepening the conflict.

The dispute continues to intensify as both groups stand firm on their respective positions, leading to a significant rift within the community.
