Avinash Arun Dhaware: A Blend Of Grit And Humanism

February 2, 2025

Avinash Arun Dhaware's debut feature, Killa (2014), beautifully captures the tumultuous emotional journey of eleven-year-old Chinu (Devadhar Archit) as he navigates the bittersweet transition to a small Konkan town.

The film delicately portrays the protagonist's yearning for freedom and connection, beautifully rendered through his budding friendships.

This tender exploration of adolescent longing garnered critical acclaim, winning two major awards at the Berlin Film Festival and numerous accolades in India, including Filmfare and National Awards.

Since then, Dhaware's filmography, encompassing feature films, shorts, and web series, has consistently demonstrated his keen eye for intimate human drama.

His films, populated by ordinary individuals grappling with unbearable circumstances, are characterised by meticulous attention to detail and an underlying current of unsettling tension that underscores the complexities of the human condition.

Avinash Arun Dhaware is also an accomplished cinematographer who shot feature films like Masaan (2015), Drishyam (2016), and Hichki (2018) amongst others.

He also shoots his films and web series and brings an exceptional visual sensibility to his work, further enriching his storytelling.

He creates visuals in the most simplistic way possible to feel like we are also a part of the small town as he has displayed in Killa, Three of Us (2022), and his short film Monsoon Walk (2024).

Avinash Arun Dhaware frames the gritty and grimy surroundings of Delhi in Paatal Lok (2020-2025) with a stark and unflinching realism.

The lushful landscape of Nagaland as we observe through his lens in the second season of Paatal Lok 2 is equally captivating, though rendered with a more subdued and contemplative tone.

He never allowed the visuals to overpower the narrative.

Although Avinash Arun Dhaware has dealt with the murky world of crime in both seasons of Paatal Lok, his other works, including feature films like Killa, Three of Us, short films like Monsoon Walk and Vishaanu (2020), and the web series School of Lies (2023), reveal a more understated and restrained approach.

His characters often unexpectedly encounter pain and suffer from situational conflicts. The crux of these narratives lies in exploring how they cope with these unforeseen circumstances.

The more they strive to find a solution, the deeper they seem to become entangled in the problem.

The question is not just how to cope with the problem, but how to find meaning and salvation within the struggle. Protagonists in Dhaware's films often embody this search for meaning in the face of adversity.

Avinash Arun Dhaware is one of those rare filmmakers who can seamlessly blend an understanding of human psychology and a command of visual storytelling, creating narratives that are both thought-provoking and deeply moving.

His unique voice deserves to be heard and celebrated by a wider audience.
