Babysana Death: Protestors Storm Court Premise

August 2, 2019

Members from late Ningthoujam Babysana's family and Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Thursday, demanding not to grant bail to Pheiroijam Landhoni and her son Pheiroijam Robinson, stormed into the premises of the Cheirap Court complex.

The protestors, holding the duo responsible for the teenager's death, demanded that the duo should not be given bail at any cost.

However, they were stopped by the police from entering the court complex and even fired tear gas to control the mob.

The anticipatory bail application submitted by the duo has been rejected by the Imphal West Sessions & District Court.

It may be mentioned here that Pheiroijam Landhoni is the principal of Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School where 14-year-old Ningthoujam Babysana was found dead under the mysterious condition on July 18 morning.

Since then there have been numerous protests, demanding strictest of punishments for the school's principal and others.

Two wardens of the hostel where Babysana was found dead have also been arrested earlier by the police.

Moreover, various individuals and organisations have also been putting pressure on the Manipur government to take the case on a serious note and award the culprits serious punishment.

Blaming the school authorities for the Class VII student's death, the pressure groups have hinted of "foul play" by the authorities.

An FIR was also registered under section 302, 305, and 341 IPC and Section 77 of the f the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) of Children Act, 2015.

"The incident in Manipur has made us think if our children are safe in the schools and boarding houses," said Rajesh Sharma, a local child-right activist of Imphal while speaking to The Story Mug.

"The Manipur government must take this matter seriously and ensure the safety of the students of various boarding houses," he further added.

He further sais that there is a bigger conspiracy into the death of the minor then what has come to the surface so far.

It is pertinent to say here that at the time when the Central government is emphasising on 'Beti bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign, deaths under mysterious conditions of girls in school hostels are serious matters of concern.

Even though the Manipur government has set up a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the case, there are lots that the government now has to do.
