A waterlogged road amid heavy Bengaluru rains

Bengaluru Rains And Hailstorm Leave 10 Dead, Expose City’s Fragile Infrastructure

Bengaluru witnessed widespread destruction after a sudden spell of heavy rain, hailstorm and strong winds struck the city on Wednesday (April 29, 2026) evening, leaving at least 10 people dead and several others injured, according to officials.

The intense weather event, which followed days of heat, lasted for less than an hour in many areas but caused extensive damage to life and property. Authorities reported uprooted trees, collapsed structures, waterlogged roads and severe traffic disruption across several parts of the city.

The most severe incident occurred near the Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, where a portion of a compound wall collapsed during the storm.

At least seven people, including children and street vendors who had taken shelter from the rain, were killed on the spot, while several others sustained injuries, reported The Indian Express.

Rescue teams, along with police and residents, rushed to the site to clear debris and assist the injured.

The Karnataka government has announced compensation for the families of the deceased and ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Apart from the wall collapse, additional deaths were reported due to rain-related incidents such as electrocution and falling debris, bringing the overall toll to 10.

Across the city, roads were inundated within minutes, and key commercial and residential areas were knee-deep in water. Commuters were stranded as vehicles broke down and traffic came to a standstill during peak hours, The Times of India reported.

Strong winds, reaching speeds of around 50 kmph, uprooted trees and damaged power lines, leading to outages in several neighbourhoods.

The storm also caused significant economic losses. In one instance, an iconic bookstore in the city centre reported the destruction of around 5,000 books after rainwater flooded the premises within minutes.

Falling branches damaged several vehicles, and civic authorities continued to receive reports of structural damage from different parts of the city.

Meteorological officials said the storm was triggered by a rapid change in weather conditions after a prolonged dry spell. The combination of heavy rainfall, hail and gusty winds resulted in what residents described as an unusually intense pre-monsoon event.

While the rain brought temporary relief from high temperatures, it also highlighted the city’s vulnerability to extreme weather.

Residents and civic groups have raised concerns about Bengaluru’s preparedness to handle sudden downpours, citing clogged drains, poor road conditions, and weak infrastructure.

Urban planners and experts say such incidents underline the need for improved drainage systems, stricter building safety checks and better disaster response mechanisms, particularly as climate variability increases the frequency of intense weather events.

Authorities have issued weather alerts for the coming days, warning of further rainfall and urging residents to exercise caution.
