After months of terror in the Mahsi region, a six-member wolf pack that had caused extensive havoc has been eliminated.
The final wolf was killed by villagers in Tamachpur on October 5, 20204, while attempting to prey on a goat.
The Bahraich District Forest Department promptly responded to the incident, recovering the wolf’s carcass for further examination.
District Forest Officer Ajit Singh confirmed the discovery, noting visible wounds on the animal that suggest it may have been killed by the villagers.
"Our teams had been trying to catch this last wolf for several days. Upon receiving information about a dead animal, we went to the site and found the wolf's body. We will conduct an investigation to determine the circumstances of its death," news agency ANI reported quoting Singh.
The wolf pack had been responsible for a series of attacks in approximately 25-30 villages across the Mahsi tehsil, leading to nine fatalities and over 40 injuries.
In response to the escalating crisis, the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department launched "Operation Bhediya" to capture the wolves.
The fifth wolf was caught on September 10, while efforts to track the sixth involved the installation of snap cameras in areas identified as potential wolf habitats.
Villagers in Sikandarpur reported sightings of the wolves near local caves, prompting the Forest Department to deploy three cameras around these locations in an attempt to monitor their movements.
With the neutralisation of the final wolf, officials are now focusing on assessing the situation and preventing any future incidents.
Further action will be determined following the postmortem of the deceased wolf.
