A bundle of gas-filled balloons caught fire inside a lift at a residential building in Goregaon West on February 2, 2026, officials said on February 4, 2026.
CCTV footage circulating online shows three people-two male and one female- entering the lift, with one man carrying a bundle of gas-filled balloons.
Shortly after the doors closed, the balloons ignited and the cabin filled with smoke and flames for a brief period.
All three occupants escaped; two sustained minor burn injuries and were taken for treatment.
Police have registered a case and launched an inquiry into the incident. Investigators are examining the type of gas used to inflate the balloons and whether safety norms were breached while transporting them in the lift.
Residents and housing-society officials warned against carrying potentially hazardous items in lifts, noting that some cheap balloons are filled with flammable gases rather than inert helium.
The fire was confined to the lift and did not spread to other parts of the building.
