Congress MP and Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi announced on February 14, 2025, that he will pursue legal action against what he termed as the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) "malicious and baseless" allegations against him and his wife.
The BJP has accused the couple of having connections to the Pakistani government and George Soros’s Open Society, suggesting potential threats to national security.
The controversy intensified after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the state cabinet would discuss the implications of recent revelations concerning an MP from Assam and their impact on national security.
Taking to social media platform X, Gogoi denounced the allegations, saying, "The BJP has gone to extreme measures to defame me and my family. Their allegations are malicious and baseless. I will be taking the appropriate legal action."
Chief Minister Sarma has alleged that Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Colbourn, has links to the Pakistani government and Soros’s Open Society.
The Assam Chief Minister further raised concerns about the timing of certain political events associated with Gaurav Gogoi, including a 2015 meeting with the Pakistani High Commissioner to India.
Sarma has demanded that Gogoi and his wife provide explanations regarding their alleged links to Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI, and their purported involvement in taking young individuals to the Pakistan High Commission for "brainwashing and radicalisation."
The Assam Chief Minister has also raised questions regarding Colbourn’s foreign citizenship and her past work in Pakistan.
"Sooner or later, it will be known how foreign powers, led by George Soros’s ecosystem, influenced a major decision of Assam Congress in 2014. The truth will emerge in due course," the media reported quoting Chief Minister Sarma.
He reiterated his call for answers, asserting, "The couple needs to address serious concerns regarding their alleged links with the ISI and their role in taking young impressionable minds to the Pakistan High Commission for brainwashing and radicalisation."
As the political row escalates, MP Gaurav Gogoi has remained firm in his stance, maintaining that the accusations are unfounded and politically motivated.
