IMD Forecasts Thunderstorms Across Assam; Heavy Rain May Aggravate Flood Situation

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, lightning and widespread rainfall across Assam on Friday (August 7, 2026), with the fresh spell of rain likely to aggravate the flood situation in parts of the state if it intensifies.

The weather office has predicted similar conditions over Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, while Arunachal Pradesh is expected to receive heavy rainfall.

The forecast assumes significance as several parts of Assam continue to grapple with floods triggered by persistent monsoon rain.

With the catchment areas in Assam and neighbouring states already saturated, heavy showers over Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya could lead to a fresh rise in river levels, inundation of low-lying areas and localised flash floods.

Landslides may also occur in vulnerable hill districts if the rainfall remains intense.

The IMD has advised people to remain alert during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under isolated trees or electric poles during lightning activity.

Elsewhere in the country, the IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Kerala, Mahe, Odisha, Coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka.

Heavy rainfall is also likely over Bihar, Chhattisgarh, East Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and West Madhya Pradesh.

Rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning has been forecast over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jharkhand, Lakshadweep, West Bengal, Madhya Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and Uttarakhand.

Thunderstorms and lightning are also expected over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Telangana and Sikkim, the IMD said.
