India Announces $500,000 Aid For Earthquake-Hit Vanuatu

January 3, 2025

In a significant gesture of solidarity, India has pledged $500,000 in assistance to the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu to support its recovery efforts following a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck on December 17, 2024.

The announcement, made on January 2, 2025, underscores India’s commitment to providing humanitarian aid and fostering resilience in the Indo-Pacific region.

The earthquake, which originated near Vanuatu’s coast in the South Pacific Ocean, caused widespread destruction, claiming lives and leaving a trail of devastation across the nation.

The Government of India expressed deep condolences to Vanuatu’s government and people for the catastrophic impact of the disaster.

“As a close friend and partner under the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation, and as a gesture of solidarity with the friendly people of Vanuatu, the Government of India extends a relief assistance of $500,000 to support relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction efforts,” stated the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

India reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to supporting nations in the Indo-Pacific region during crises, highlighting disaster risk reduction and management as a core pillar of its Indo-Pacific Oceans’ Initiative.

This initiative, introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2019, aims to foster cooperation among regional partners in tackling shared challenges.

The MEA emphasised that India has consistently stood by Vanuatu during times of natural calamities.

"India is committed to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief and continues to be a responsible and steadfast responder in the region," the ministry said in its statement.

This aid package reflects India’s broader strategy of strengthening ties with Pacific island nations while advancing mutual goals of sustainable development and disaster resilience.

As Vanuatu begins the arduous process of rebuilding, India’s support aims to bolster its recovery and ensure long-term stability in the region.

India’s pledge stands as a testament to its growing role as a key humanitarian partner in the Indo-Pacific, extending not just financial assistance but also a message of enduring friendship and solidarity during moments of adversity.
