India Is Second Largest Smartphone Manufacturer: Ravi Shankar Prasad

India has emerged as the world's second-largest mobile phone manufacturing country, claimed Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

"Over 200 mobile phone manufacturing units have been set up in the country in the last five years," Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a press conference on Tuesday.

"Under the leadership of PMĀ  @narendramodi, India has emerged as the 2nd largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world," Prasad had said in a tweet on Monday.

"In the last 5 years, more than 200 Mobile Phone Manufacturing units have been set up. #ThinkElectronicsThinkIndia," the tweet had added.

 

I a graph shared by the minister it was revealed that the country has exported 36 million units of SmartPhones in FY 2020 as compared to 17 million units in FY 2019.

"The graph shows that there has been a growth by 111.76 per cent," Prasad further said.

"In terms of value, smartphones worth Rs 21 thousand crores were exported in FY 2020 with a growth rate of 91 per cent," Ravi Shankar Prasad added.

Further, Prasad said, "Now is the opportunity for companies to consider India as a destination in the ESDM sector."

"This is the time for the companies to be part of the next largest electronic manufacturing hub of the world," he further said.

It may be mentioned that in India, in terms of handset manufacturing, companies like Samsung, Realme and Xiaomi are at the forefront.

Other major smartphone giants that have been eying to enter the Indian manufacturing market include Apple amongst others.
