IPL 2026: Riyan Parag Fined, Handed Demerit Point After Vaping Controversy
Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee and handed one demerit point after being caught vaping inside the dressing room during an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 match, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Thursday (April 30, 2026).
The disciplinary action relates to an incident during Rajasthan’s clash against Punjab Kings in Mullanpur, where television footage showed Parag using what appeared to be an e-cigarette while seated in the dressing room.
The clip quickly went viral, prompting scrutiny over player conduct and compliance with regulations.
In an official statement, the BCCI said Parag had breached a Level 1 offence under the IPL Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials, which pertains to behaviour that brings the game into disrepute.
Parag accepted the charge and the sanction imposed by match referee Amit Sharma, bringing immediate closure to the disciplinary proceedings at the league level.
The IPL clarified that the punishment was limited to a financial penalty and a single demerit point, with no suspension or further sporting sanction imposed at this stage.
The controversy arose after broadcast cameras captured the incident during the second innings of the match. The visuals overshadowed Rajasthan Royals’ six-wicket victory, in which Parag contributed 29 runs during the chase.

The incident also drew attention because vaping is banned in India under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019, and smoking-related activities are generally restricted within IPL venues, including dressing rooms.
Earlier reports had indicated uncertainty over whether specific provisions existed within the IPL rulebook to address such conduct. However, the BCCI ultimately proceeded under broader clauses concerning the maintenance of the game’s image and integrity.
While the immediate penalty has been imposed, reports suggest the BCCI is continuing to review the matter, including whether additional steps are required to reinforce discipline and compliance standards within teams.
The episode has reignited debate about professional behaviour in high-profile tournaments, particularly amid increasing scrutiny from live broadcasts and social media.
