Meghalaya’s Premium Ginger Finds Global Footing In Dubai

March 21, 2025

In a landmark moment for the state’s agricultural sector, Meghalaya’s Premium Ginger has made its way to Dubai this season, marking a significant step towards international market expansion.

This milestone is not just a triumph for the state’s farmers but also a testament to the quality and potential of Meghalaya’s spice industry on a global platform.

A delegation of eight farmers from Meghalaya recently visited Dubai, where they had the unique opportunity to gain firsthand exposure to international markets.

This visit provided them with insights into global trade dynamics, consumer preferences, and quality standards, equipping them with valuable knowledge to enhance their production and marketing strategies.

The export of Meghalaya’s ginger to Dubai represents a crucial breakthrough for the state’s agricultural economy.

Known for its high pungency, rich aroma, and organic quality, Meghalaya’s ginger has long been recognised for its superior attributes.

However, limited market access and supply chain constraints have often hindered its reach beyond domestic boundaries.

This recent achievement signals a positive shift, ensuring better income opportunities for local farmers and positioning Meghalaya as a key player in the global spice trade.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to integrate Meghalaya’s agricultural products into the global supply chain.

With increasing international demand for high-quality, chemical-free spices, Meghalaya’s organic ginger holds immense promise.

The state government, in collaboration with export agencies and agricultural cooperatives, has been actively working to promote Meghalaya’s ginger and other indigenous products in foreign markets.

For the farmers involved, this exposure to international markets has been an eye-opening experience. Many of them had never imagined their produce reaching global consumers.

The opportunity to witness their ginger being accepted and appreciated in an international setting has reinforced their confidence and aspirations.

“This is a proud moment for all of us. Seeing our ginger in Dubai’s markets is a dream come true. We are hopeful that this will open up more avenues for us in the future,” said one of the farmers who was part of the delegation.

Experts believe that Meghalaya’s success in exporting ginger to Dubai could pave the way for more of the state’s agricultural produce to find a place in international markets.

Meanwhile, in a post on 'X', state chief minister Conrad Sangma wrote, "Happy to share that Meghalaya’s premium ginger has made its way to Dubai this season!"

"A proud moment as 8 of our farmers visited Dubai, gaining firsthand exposure to international markets. This milestone ensures better income and strengthens Meghalaya’s place in the global spice trade," Sangma added.

The region is also known for its turmeric, black pepper, and Lakadong turmeric, which have been gaining recognition for their high curcumin content and medicinal properties.

The development is expected to encourage more farmers to adopt sustainable farming practices and improve post-harvest processing techniques to meet global standards.

As international interest grows, investments in better logistics, packaging, and certification processes will be crucial in ensuring a steady supply and maintaining the quality of exports.

While this is a commendable achievement, challenges remain. Strengthening the export infrastructure, ensuring consistent quality, and navigating trade regulations will require concerted efforts from both government and private stakeholders.

However, the successful entry of Meghalaya’s ginger into Dubai’s market is a promising start, demonstrating that the state’s agricultural products have the potential to compete on a global scale.

As Meghalaya’s farmers celebrate this achievement, there is renewed optimism about the future of the state’s spice trade.

With the right support and continued efforts, this could be the beginning of a new chapter in Meghalaya’s journey towards becoming a recognised name in the global agricultural export industry.
