Misunderstanding Feminism: When Equality Is Misused

October 27, 2024

Feminism, at its heart, is a movement for gender equality—advocating for the fair treatment of both men and women.

Over the decades, it has been instrumental in empowering women and addressing long-standing gender biases.

However, as with any movement, there are instances where its values have been misinterpreted or misused, leading to unintended harm.

In India, particularly, cases have emerged where feminist principles or laws meant to protect women have been misapplied, raising concerns about their fairness and impact.

The Misuse Of Feminist Laws In India

One prominent issue is the misuse of legal provisions designed to safeguard women.

The erstwhile Section 498 (A) of the Indian Penal Code ( now Section 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita), for example, was enacted to protect women from cruelty within marriage.

While this law is crucial in addressing domestic violence, it has also been reported to be misused in certain cases.

In 2022, the Supreme Court of India noted that false complaints had been filed under this law in some instances, leading to the wrongful harassment of men and their families.

Data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) shows that up to 10% of cases under Section 498 (A) are found to be false. While this number might seem small, the impact of false accusations can be severe.

Innocent men face social stigma, legal entanglements, and psychological distress. Families become divided, and reputations are often irreparably damaged. Misuse of the law risks creating skepticism, which could erode trust in laws that are vital for protecting genuine victims of abuse.

The Broader Impact On Gender Relations

This misuse also affects the larger conversation on gender equality.

A 2021 study by the Indian Institute of Management, Indore, found that 24% of men in India felt reluctant to discuss gender issues, fearing they might be unfairly labeled or accused.

This kind of hesitancy prevents open dialogue between men and women, which is essential for promoting understanding and finding solutions to gender inequalities.

When men feel alienated from discussions about feminism, it creates a divide that hinders progress for everyone.

The misuse of feminist ideals also complicates the fight for real gender issues, diverting attention from critical concerns like workplace harassment, wage gaps, and violence against women.

Instead of building bridges between genders, these instances of misapplication can create mistrust and hostility.

Moving Toward a Balanced Approach

Feminism, in its true form, is not about female superiority or vilifying men. It is about justice, fairness, and creating a world where both men and women can thrive equally.

Misunderstanding or misusing its principles only dilutes the movement’s goals and creates unnecessary friction.

What’s needed is a more balanced approach—one where laws are applied fairly, and accusations are thoroughly investigated before conclusions are drawn.

Feminism should encourage cooperation between genders, fostering an environment where men and women can discuss their concerns openly without fear of being unfairly judged.

The Way Forward

As we continue to navigate the complexities of gender relations, it’s crucial to ask: How can we ensure that the core values of feminism—equality, fairness, and justice—remain intact while also preventing its misuse? How do we foster dialogue that builds understanding rather than creating divisions between genders?
