Meet Lalringthara, a 78-year-old man from Mizoram who has defied age barriers to pursue his education with unwavering determination.

Every day, he embarks on a 3-kilometre journey to attend classes at Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) High School in Hruaikawn village, wearing a school uniform and carrying a bag filled with books, the media reported.

His inspiring story has touched the hearts of many, making him a symbol of hope and perseverance.

Born in 1945 near the Indo-Myanmar border in Khuangleng village, Lalringthara's educational journey was cut short after the demise of his father when he was in Class 2.

Forced to assist his mother in the jhum fields, he faced immense hardships in his early years, and poverty hindered his schooling.

Despite life's challenges, Lalringthara's thirst for knowledge and desire to enhance his English language skills kept burning. He yearned to write applications in English and understand television news reports.

Currently working as a Church Security Guard in New Hruaikawn, he is proficient in reading and writing in the Mizo language.

However, it was his passion to comprehend the English language that pushed him to return to school.

With the support of RMSA High School, Lalringthara enrolled in Class 9 to fulfil his dream of improving his English proficiency.

His ability to read and write in Mizo has been a valuable asset, but he aspires to overcome the confusion caused by the infusion of English words in modern literature.

Lalringthara's dedication to education has not gone unnoticed.

Vanlalkima, the Headmaster in charge at New Hruaikawn Middle School, lauds Lalringthara as an inspiration and a challenge to both students and teachers.
