In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the Assam government has taken a number of precautionary steps, even though no positive cases have been reported so far.

Addressing the media on March 16, Assam Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna said that there is no need to panic at this moment.

"We are doing our every bit and there is no shortage of essential commodities in the state to fight the outbreak," Krishna added.

He further informed that quarantine centre facilities for 860 persons, isolation centre facilities for more than 100 persons and intensive care unit facilities for 50 persons have been kept ready.

"Private hospitals have also been asked to keep isolated ICU beds ready for any eventuality. We are reviewing the situation every day," Krishna added.

The Chief Secretary further informed that there is no shortage of any medicine in the state and that people should not panic.

"Follow the WHO guidelines and take precautionary measures and do not panic," Krishna said.

"I am personally monitoring the situation and I am in touch with the District Commissioners and Joint Directors of Health Services regularly via video conferencing," Krishna said.

On being asked a section of people panic buying essential commodities, the Chief Secretary said, "There is no need for the people to stock essentials."

"There is no shortage of essential commodities in Assam and the Food and Civil Supplies Department has been directed to ensure that no part of the state faces any food shortage," he added.

Meanwhile, the Centre has closed all the land border posts with the neighbouring countries barring a few notified ones.

The notified ones include three in Assam-  Mankachar and Sutarkandi in the India-Bangladesh border and Darranga in India-Bhutan border.

"Every person entering the state, irrespective they come via the posts or by land or air, are thoroughly screened," he added.

So far two persons have died in India and over 100 positive coronavirus cases have been reported so far.

One youth in Raha and one in Biswanath district were screened as they suspected to show coronavirus symptoms.
