Rahul Gandhi Pledges Justice For Zubeen Garg
Congress leader and former AICC president Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 5, 2026, calling him the “most corrupt Chief Minister in the country”.
While addressing the gathering ahead of the Assam Assembly elections on April 9, 206, in the Kamrup district, Gandhi drew a contrast between Sarma and the late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away in Singapore in September 2025
“On one side is Zubeen Garg, and on the other is your Chief Minister. He is the most corrupt Chief Minister in the country. Twenty-four hours a day, hatred, filthy language, and violence flow from his mouth,” Gandhi said.
“There is a vast difference between his ideology and Zubeen Garg’s ideology and thinking,” he added.

Gandhi further alleged that Sarma had dragged his family into corruption and warned that legal consequences were inevitable
Gandhi further alleged that Sarma had dragged his family into corruption and warned that legal consequences were inevitable.
“Now, not only will he be at a loss, but his entire family too… You can write it down — he can do as much nonsense as he wants, he can spread as much violence as he wants, but ultimately the law will catch up with him and put him in jail,” he said.
Congress’ Poll Promises
Gandhi outlined several key promises if the Congress party forms the next government in Assam:
- Justice for Zubeen Garg within 100 days of coming to power.
- Unconditional monthly cash transfers to women’s bank accounts.
- A starting grant of Rs 50,000 to every woman in Assam who wants to start her own business.
- Conversion of Eksonia Patta (annual land permits) into Myadi Patta (permanent ownership), benefiting around one million people.
- Monthly pension of Rs 1,250 for the elderly, along with a dedicated department for senior citizens.
Granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six tribal communities. - Launch of a government health insurance scheme providing up to Rs 25 lakh per family for medical treatment.
Gandhi also criticised the current government’s alleged links with the central leadership and made remarks linking Prime Minister Narendra Modi with US President Donald Trump and the “Epstein Files.”
The rally was part of Congress intensive campaign in the state, where the party is seeking to regain power after years in opposition.
