Ranthambore Mourns The Loss of Its Iconic Tigress, Arrowhead

June 21, 2025

Arrowhead, the celebrated tigress of Ranthambore National Park, has left behind an enduring legacy following her passing on June 19, 2025.

As the scorching summer sun drives wildlife towards the park’s lakes and streams, visitors flock to catch a glimpse of Ranthambore’s famed animals. Yet, this season feels different — the forest mourns the loss of one of its most remarkable inhabitants.

Arrowhead, officially known as Tigress T-84, succumbed to bone cancer after a prolonged struggle.

Her death marks the end of a significant chapter in Ranthambore’s history, as she was not just another big cat but a symbol of the park’s wild spirit.

Wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists regarded Arrowhead with awe. Her presence in the park was commanding, and the stories of her reign became part of Ranthambore’s rich lore.

Mahendra Jain, a wildlife filmmaker who has been documenting her journey, recalled his first sighting of Arrowhead in 2015.

“She was with her siblings Pacman and Lightning, and their mother Krishna. Even as a young tigress, Arrowhead’s confidence and strength were unmistakable. There was something about her that instantly captured your attention,” he said.

In her final days, Arrowhead’s struggle was visible to those who loved and followed her. Just two days before she died, wildlife photographer Sachin Rai spotted her near Padam Talab.

“It was heartbreaking,” he reflected

“She tried to stand, took a few weak steps, and collapsed again. Every movement was a battle, and eventually, she found shade beneath a tree. In that quiet moment, I sensed that the end was near,” he wrote on a social media post.

Rai shared a moving video of Arrowhead — once the powerful queen of Ranthambore — now frail, yet dignified in her final moments by the water’s edge.

The video touched many, reminding us of the fragile beauty of the wild and the deep bond between humans and the creatures of the forest.

Though Arrowhead’s life has come to an end, her spirit remains etched into the heart of Ranthambore.

Her story will continue to inspire efforts in tiger conservation and serve as a reminder of the wild majesty that once graced these forests.
