Tarun Gogoi, who was the chief minister of Assam from 2001 to 2014, passed away at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on November 23 at 5:34 pm.
During his tenure, a host of developmental activities- especially in the economic front- took place in Assam.
Before he took charge as the chief minister, the state was marred with several incidents of secret killings and other acts of violence.
However, under his tenure, the secret killings stopped and crime rates in the state also went down by a large extent.
It was under his leadership that Assam hosted the 33rd National Games in 2007, even though the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) had threatened to disrupt it.
Tarun Gogoi was admired not just by his political counterparts but also by the members of the several insurgent groups of Assam.
His death was even condoled by ULFA Commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah.
In a message to the media, Baruah said, "I wish the departed soul of Tarun Gogoi, who was the chief minister of the state thrice, get eternal peace."
Meanwhile, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi visited Guwahati on November 25 and paid a visited to Tarun Gogoi's family in Guwahati after paying his tributes to his mortal remains kept at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra.
The last rites of the late chief minister will be carried out on November 26.
