Shyamanta Kashyap, son of former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, is preparing to step into the political arena. He has nearly finalised his plans to contest from Barhampur, the constituency his father represented from 1985 to 2021.
Shyamanta Kashyap is all set to make his political debut in the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly polls.
In an exclusive interview with The Story Mug, Shyamanta Kashyap confirmed his intention to join active politics soon. He also hinted at participating in the upcoming elections, marking his formal entry into the political field.
According to insiders, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) leadership has been in frequent touch with the budding politician.

The Lurinjyoti Gogoi-led party is considering him as a potential candidate for the alliance in the forthcoming polls. Several meetings have been held to discuss the possibility of projecting Shyamanta as their candidate.
Despite ongoing discussions with various political parties, Shyamanta has yet to make the final call on which party he will contest the polls.
For some time now, Shyamanta Kashyap has been deeply involved in several developmental works in the Barhampur constituency. He has participated in numerous local events and taken the lead in various social initiatives. His active presence and involvement in the community have not gone unnoticed, and he has been working diligently to build a strong rapport with the constituents.
In addition to his political aspirations, Shyamanta is also a practising advocate. He has managed to balance his legal career with his growing political ambitions, much like his father, who was known for his dedication to public service.
Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, a prominent political figure, represented Barhampur continuously from 1985 until 2021. Due to health issues, he could not contest the 2021 assembly elections.
