Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal directed the PWD department to prepare a detailed project for developing seamless connectivity covering 216 villages of Majuli district.
He was attending the district level coordination and monitoring committee meeting of Majuli district on Friday.
The CM reviewed the implementation of various Central and state developmental schemes and took stock of functioning of PWD, water resources, tourism and Brahmaputra board in the meeting.
Sonowal emphasised on preparing a future vision plan for Majuli in consultation with PRI representatives.
He asked the PWD officials to maintain quality in their work and said that the department would have to expeditiously complete the projects.
He also directed the PWD contractors to complete the projects as per time schedule fixed in the contract and said that legal action would be initiated against contractors who fail to complete the projects on time.
"After the formation of BJP government in Assam over Rs 350 crore has been spent in Majuli for construction of roads and bridges," Sonowal said.
"As a result of this, there has been a marked change in the connectivity sector in the district," he asserted.
The CM stressed on maintenance of the roads and directed the PWD officials to carry out field level survey at Ahatguri and Bhakatchapori for construction of roads and bridges.
He also asked concerned officials to take steps for installation of street lights in Majuli.
Sonowal further directed to form a team of the WR department to conduct field level survey.
He asked the team to study the condition of the embankments before the onset of monsoon.
The team would also take help of the services of experts and consult with local people and prepare a report on the vulnerability of the embankments so that necessary action could be taken well in time.
Sonowal further directed the WR department and Brahmaputra Board officials to work in cooperation and take the help of IIT experts to prepare a long term plan for permanent solution of protection of Majuli.
He also instructed to take steps for construction of service roads along the embankments wherever needed and motivate the local youth for plantation of cane on the river side of the embankment to check erosion.
He said that the government would provide subsidy against such cultivation under Bamboo and Cane Policy of the government.
Sonowal further directed the WR department to construct sluice gates to ensure regular flow of water to the water-bodies from the Brahmaputra.
He asked the department to take help of digital system for opening and closing of the sluice gates so that no anti-social elements could take advantage of the gates.
He also instructed to form a monitoring committee for looking after the porcupines installed by the Brahmaputra Board by engaging local youth.
