Udupi Manipal Viral Video: Couple’s Public Kiss Triggers Local Objection, Online Debate
The Udupi Manipal viral video showing a young couple allegedly kissing on a public road has sparked widespread debate on social media, raising questions about public decency and personal freedom in India.
According to reports, the incident took place in Manipal, a well-known educational hub in Karnataka’s Udupi district.
The couple was seen engaging in a public display of affection on a roadside, drawing the attention of passersby.
Eyewitnesses said some residents objected to the act and confronted the couple, saying such behaviour was unacceptable in a public place. The locals reportedly spoke in Kannada while reprimanding them.
During the exchange, the young man asked one of the locals to speak in Hindi. However, the person refused, leading to a brief verbal disagreement. There were no reports of any physical altercation, and both the couple and the locals eventually left the spot.
The video of the incident has since circulated widely across social media platforms, drawing mixed reactions from users.

While some criticised the couple’s actions as inappropriate in a public setting, others argued that consenting adults should have the freedom to express affection without interference.
The episode has also sparked discussion about language and regional identity, following the exchange between Kannada-speaking locals and the man who requested them to speak in Hindi.
Legal experts note that public displays of affection are not explicitly illegal in India. However, acts deemed “obscene” in public places may fall under provisions such as Section 294 of the Indian Penal Code, depending on interpretation and circumstances.
The incident has once again highlighted the ongoing tension between evolving social norms and traditional expectations in public spaces across the country.
