"The government is not going to roll back CAA. Those protesting against it may continue doing so," said union home minister Amit Shah.

He was addressing a rally in Lucknow on Tuesday where he asserted that Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) has nothing the citizens of the country.

"The opposition is spreading lies about CAA. here is no provision of taking anyone’s citizenship in CAA," Shah added.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) was passed in the Lok Sabha on December 9, 2019, and by the Rajya Sabha on December 11, 2019, making it into an Act.

Since then there have been widespread protests against CAA across the country, with Assam being the epicentre.

So far 5 persons in Assam and over 40 in various places in the country have been martyred in anti-CAA protests.

The Kerala and the Punjab government has recently passed resolutions against CAA and said they will not implement the Act in the states.

Meanwhile, Amit Shah, speaking about the January 5 violence in JNU campus, said, "Those talking about breaking Bharat Mata into 1000 pieces will be sent to jail."

"Anti-Indian slogans were raised in JNU. Those who want to break India into 1000 pieces, shouldn't they be sent to jail? If you chant anti-India slogans, I will put you behind bars," Shah asserted.

So far, 60 petitions challenging CAA have been filed in the Supreme Court.

The Apex Court on December 18, 2019, responding to the pleas issued a notice to the Centre seeking its response on the petitions.

On Wednesday (January 22), the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear petitions challenging the validity of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

MeanStudents’ associations in the northeast have declared a total shutdown across universities and colleges in the region on Wednesday.

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) is one of the main anti-CAA petitioners apart from the Congress and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP)- an ally of the BJP government in the state.

The fraternity of the north-eastern universities hoped the Supreme Court will address the “unconstitutional and contentious CAA and its ill repercussions” on the indigenous people in the northeast.

The universities include Gauhati University, Dibrugarh University, North Eastern Hill University, Tezpur University, Assam Women’s University, Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Nagaland University, Rajiv Gandhi University, and North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology.
