World Book Day: Its History And Significance

April 23, 2022

On the occasion of World Book Day on April 23, 2022, Assam Chief Miister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a tweet, said, "There is no friend as loyal as a book, for books enrich our lives with knowledge and wisdom. On #WorldBookDay, I appeal to everyone to make reading a life-long habit and contribute in creating a learned and wise Assam."

World Book Day is an annual celebration to promote reading and the joy of sharing stories with children. This year, the day falls on Saturday, April 23.

Introduction to World Book Day

History

The first World Book Day was celebrated by UNESCO on April 23, 1995. The date was chosen to honour the death of two of the most important figures in literature, Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare.

Significance

The day is an opportunity to celebrate reading and writers around the world. It is also a day to promote literacy and bring attention to the importance of books and reading.

Why Was World Book Day Invented

It is estimated that over a billion people celebrate World Book Day each year.

The original idea was conceived in 1922 by Spanish writer Vicente Clavel Andrés as a way to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes.

It was first celebrated on October 6, 1926, on Cervantes' birthday, before being moved to his death date, April 23, in 1930.

Andres came up with the idea while he was working as a librarian in Barcelona. He thought that a day dedicated to books and reading would be a great way to encourage people to visit libraries and learn more about different cultures.

The Significance Of Books And Reading

The written word has always been a powerful tool, capable of influencing the thoughts and actions of those who read it. Books can educate and entertain, inspire and motivate, instill hope or kindle hatred. They can transport us to far-off places and introduce us to new ideas and cultures. In short, books have the power to change lives.

This is perhaps never more true than on World Book Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the joys of reading and the importance of books in our lives.

There are many ways to celebrate World Book Day. Many schools hold special events and activities, such as dress-up days, book fairs and reading competitions. Libraries often offer free or discounted membership on this day. And many bookstores offer special deals and promotions.

But perhaps the best way to celebrate World Book Day is simply by picking up a good book and losing yourself in its pages.
