Rare Cardiac Surgery Gives Mizoram Patient A New Lease Of Life

Doctors at Manipal Hospital Broadway in Kolkata have successfully carried out a rare and complex redo Bentall procedure on a 72-year-old patient from Mizoram, saving him from a potentially life-threatening cardiac condition.

The patient, whose identity has been withheld, had previously undergone double heart valve replacement surgery at another hospital in 2023. He later sought treatment at Manipal Hospital after experiencing persistent chest pain.

Medical investigations revealed a dangerous aneurysm involving the aortic root and extending into the ascending aorta, a condition that required immediate surgical intervention.

According to the hospital, the surgery was particularly challenging because it involved reopening the chest of a patient who had already undergone major heart surgery.

Scar tissue and adhesions from the earlier operation significantly increased the risks associated with the procedure.

The operation was led by Dr Siddhartha Mukhopadhyay, Consultant in Thoracic and Vascular Surgery. To minimise the risks during re-entry into the chest cavity, the surgical team established circulatory support before opening the sternum.

The diseased section of the aorta and the previously implanted valve were then replaced using a composite graft as part of the redo Bentall procedure.

Hospital officials said the patient responded well to the surgery and was shifted out of intensive care within a day.

Doctors noted that the procedure not only addressed the aneurysm but also improved cardiac function and reduced the risk of future heart failure.

The Bentall procedure is a highly specialised operation used to treat serious disorders affecting the aortic root and aortic valve.

Redo Bentall surgeries are considered among the most technically demanding procedures in cardiac surgery because of the complications associated with previous operations.

Medical experts said the successful outcome highlights the growing capability of advanced cardiac centres in handling complex reoperative heart surgeries, offering hope to patients with high-risk cardiovascular conditions.
