“Have You Seen My Son?”: Sivasagar Flood Leaves Mother Searching For Missing Son

The devastating flood that struck Sivasagar and Charaideo districts on July 19, 2026, caught thousands of people off guard, forcing them to flee their homes with little time to save themselves or their belongings.

While many escaped to higher ground, the flood swept away houses, livestock and everything that families had built over the years.

For one family in Sivasagar’s Gorkush village under the Nimaijan area, however, the flood left behind a wound that refuses to heal.

Nilu Burhagohain, the only son of the family, went missing on July 23, 2026, after he reportedly fell into the swollen Dorika River.

More than a week later, there is still no trace of him.

His disappearance has plunged the family into despair, with his mother, Renu Burhagohain, refusing to give up hope. Wherever she goes, she asks the same question: “Have you seen my son?”

She repeats those words to neighbours, strangers, volunteers and even relief workers arriving in the village.

Every person she meets is asked the same question, hoping someone might have seen her missing son or bring news that would end the family’s agonising wait.

The heartbreaking sight of a mother searching for answers has deeply moved residents of the area, many of whom have joined efforts to look for Nilu.

Meanwhile, the locals have informed the Sivasagar Sadar Police Station about Nilu’s disappearance, and a search has reportedly been launched. However, despite the passage of days, he remains untraced.

Although floodwaters that began inundating Sivasagar and Charaideo on July 19, 2026, have started receding in many places, they have left behind stories of loss that cannot be measured by damaged homes alone.

For Renu Burhagohain, every passing day begins with hope and ends with the same unanswered question: “Have you seen my son?”

As per reports, around 80 people have been officially declared dead in the devastating flood so far, as of July 31, 2026, with Sivasagar district alone reporting 38 confirmed deaths during this period.

According to locals, the number of deceased will increase as the debris is cleared, as many people still remain untraced and are reportedly missing.
