Good news for the northeast at the time of COVID-19 pandemic as the region is set to have new educational institutions soon.

"The Centre is committed to providing quality education to the region," informed Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal.

"The government is devoted for infrastructure development in educational institutions across India, especially to the students from the northeast," he added.

"The Centre has taken plenty of major decisions this year for developing the education scenario across the country," Pokhriyal informed.

"Some of these decisions include granting permission for the establishment of permanent campus of Sikkim University," he added.

Sikkim University is a Central University and the proposed campus would be established at Yangyang at a cost of Rs 986.47 crore.

For this, he said, the Sikkim government has allotted 300 acres of land at cost of Rs 15 crore.

"Of the total land provided by the Sikkim government, 265.94 acres of land has been already handed over to the university," Pokhriyal said.

He further said that the remaining land will be handed over soon and it is under process.

The HRD minister further informed that the Centre has already sanctioned revised cost estimates of 6 NITs at Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Delhi and Puducherry at Rs. 4371.90 crores.

These NITs with the approved Revised Cost Estimates (RCEs), Pokriyal added, will be fully functional by March 31, 2022.
