Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel passed away in a Gurugram hospital on November 25 (Wednesday) morning at 3.30 am.

The 71-year-old Congress leader was admitted to the hospital following COVID-19 complications.

In a tweet, his son Faisal Patel said, " With profound grief, I regret to announce that sad and untimely demise of my father on 25/11 at 3.30 am."

Patel was under treatment for over a month, after he tested positive for COVID-19.

He was constantly monitored by a team of doctors.

Patel is the second senior Congress parliamentarian to die due to post-COVID-19 complications within a span of two days.

On November 23, senior Congress leader and former Assam Chief Minister for three terms Tarun Gogoi breathed his last at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

The 84-year-old leader was admitted to the hospital after he complained of breathing problem on November 2.

Gogoi's death has left behind an irreparable void in Assam politics.

Meanwhile, Patel's death has been mourned by several senior leaders.

Mourning Patel's death, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said, "In Sh. Ahmed Patel, I have lost a colleague, whose entire life was dedicated to the Congress Party."

"His faithfulness and dedication, his commitment to his duty, his always being there to help, his generosity were rare qualities that distinguished him from others," she added.

"I have lost an irreplaceable comrade, a faithful colleague and a friend. I mourn his passing and I feel deeply for his bereaved family to whom I offer my sincere feelings of empathy and support," she further said.

In a tweet, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram said, "Deeply shocked and saddened to learn that my dear friend Ahmed Patel passed away in the early hours of today...For two decades, he was one of the staunchest pillars of the Congress party and a trusted counsellor. He will be profoundly missed...I offer my tribute to his memory and convey my sincere and heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family."

For Assam minister, Bismita Gogoi also mourned the death of the senior Congress leader.

"In Ahmed Patel, Congress lost a true leader who stood by the party in its every adversity. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the departed soul," Gogoi wrote in a Facebook post.

In a tweet, Information & Broadcasting minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, "Deeply mourn the sad demise of veteran Congress leader Ahmed Patel. With his vast experience and organisational skills, he left his own mark on the polity of the country. We were also neighbours in Delhi. Surely he will be missed. May his soul rest in peace."
