January 22, 2021

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on January 22, 2021, inaugurated the Wahrew Bridge- India's longest arch bridge- at Sohbar.

The bridge is constructed at a cost of Rs 49.396 crore under the Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR) scheme of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).

Being India's longest arch bridge, it will connect Bholaganj and Sohbar to Nongri.

Informing about the inauguration the Chief Minister tweeted, "Inaugurated the Longest Road Arch Bridge in India, the Wahrew Bridge at #Sohbar constructed at ?49.395 Cr under NLCPR of @MDoNER_India, connecting Bholaganj & Sohbar to Nongjri. An arch bridge is a bridge with abutments at each end shaped as a curved arch. Arch bridges work by transferring the weight of the bridge and its loads partially into a horizontal thrust restrained by the abutments at either side.
