Assam Doctor Missing In Arunachal Since May 31, Media Silent As Family Cries for Help

June 25, 2025

In a deeply troubling and underreported case, the disappearance of a Guwahati-based medical professional has sparked growing concern across Assam. Dr Dewananjeev Kumar Sharma, the Assam doctor missing since May 31, 2025, disappeared during a solo trip to Parshuram Kund in Arunachal Pradesh.

With over three weeks gone and still no trace of him, the family is pleading for urgent action as questions mount over police inaction, media silence, and cross-border cooperation.

A Simple Trip Turns Into A Mystery

Dr Sharma had embarked on a short solo trip to Parshuram Kund on his motorcycle and checked into Toolo Resort in Wakro, located in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lohit district. The last confirmed sighting of him was around 8 am. on May 31, when he reportedly had breakfast and requested a cup of tea.

Since then, he has vanished without a trace.

His room at the resort later yielded his mobile phone, wallet, ID card, motorcycle keys, camera, and other belongings.

However, there was no sign of the doctor himself.

No CCTV, No Explanation

Deepening the mystery, the resort reportedly has no CCTV cameras, and management has not shared complete guest registration records with the family, according to sources.

This lack of basic security infrastructure and transparency has left the family and friends increasingly suspicious and emotionally devastated.

“How does someone disappear into thin air in a known tourist area, in daylight, with no trace?” asked one of Dr. Sharma’s colleagues.

“There are no answers—only silence,” he added.

Family’s Agony And Call for Justice

Back home in Guwahati, Dr Sharma’s 82-year-old mother, Pranati Sharma, waits with tearful eyes and an unwavering hope that her son will return. His wife and daughter are equally devastated, struggling to navigate each day without answers or support.

The family promptly filed a missing person’s FIR with the Arunachal Pradesh Police. They have also written letters to the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, seeking an urgent and impartial investigation.

However, they claim that there has been little progress and even less communication from authorities.

Media Silence vs. Sensationalism: A Stark Contrast

While the Sharma family continues its desperate search, the media’s indifference has only added to their pain.

Despite the seriousness of the case—a doctor vanishing in a different state under mysterious circumstances—the incident has seen no substantial coverage.

In sharp contrast, the media recently went into overdrive covering the Raj and Sonam Raghuvanshi honeymoon murder case, flooding television screens, social media, and front pages with updates, theories, and dramatisations.

“The same channels that dissected every minute of a salacious love triangle have shown zero interest in a missing doctor,” said a relative.

“Does someone’s life matter less because it lacks a scandalous headline?” she questioned.

Observers and critics argue that media sensationalism has created a hierarchy of relevance, where real crises and tragedies are sidelined if they lack the drama to go viral

The family now appeals not only for governmental intervention but also for the media to play its part in demanding accountability.

Assam Govt Urged To Step In

The family has now appealed to the Assam government to take immediate action by engaging with its Arunachal counterpart and facilitating interstate cooperation.

Legal experts assert that the case demands joint jurisdictional effort, especially given the circumstances and the possibility of foul play.

“Time is critical. Without pressure from Assam, this investigation may remain stalled indefinitely,” said a human rights lawyer in Guwahati.

A Life In Limbo

As hope dims with each passing day, the Sharma family continues to plead for answers. Their home remains painfully quiet, interrupted only by the footsteps of a mother who still walks to the gate—hoping each knock is her son coming home.

“He is not the kind of man to run away,” a close friend said.

“Something happened, and we have a right to know what,” he added.

Will there be a just and thorough investigation? Will the media finally give voice to a family crying for help? Or will this case, like many others, fade into silence, leaving behind only grief and questions?
