Assam-Mizoram Border Conflicts: 'Shame On Assam' Hashtag Trends On Twitter

As the Assam-Mizoram border conflicts continue to escalate and there rests an uneasy calmness along the state borders, a hashtag campaign shaming Assam was found trending on Twitter on July 28.

Along with the #shameonassam, the other hashtag campaigns that were found trending on the day were #shame_on_assam, #assamshotfirstmizoram, and #AssamShotFireFirst.

Bringing it to the notice of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, a Twitter user @vikrantkumar wrote, "Saw the' Shame on Assam' hashtag trending.. so did a quick check on who is trending it. Found that most of the handles are from the USA, only 1/3rd from India. Just 2.6 million reach shows that mostly bots were used. Who is behind it?".

Replying to the tweet, CM Sarma said, "Very serious matter. I agree - Need to know who is behind this?"

Replying to the tweet, senior adviser to the ministry of information & broadcasting Kanchan Gupta said, "This. The destabilisation game is being plotted outside #India"

Another user named @IHarjeetR said, "Most of the PR companies hired by rich politicians and journalists are based out of USA".

Tezpur MP Pallab Lochan Das, replying to the tweet said, "Paid Propaganda or Hidden Agenda. Need to know the truth..!!"

Countering Vikrant Kumar's tweet, a user named @axhzsl wrote, "Assam illegally entered Mizoram with police force Assam forcefully occupied Mizo police duty post Assam police shamelessly harassed Mizo couple Assam police shamelessly harassed Mizo civilians Assam fired at Mizoram and shot first Mizoram police retaliated".
