In this fast-paced world, every election matters and politics is now a 24X7 profession. In the countdown for the Assembly Election in 2026, Assam has conducted two ground-level elections in the last two months. The first one was the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council election and the second one, the just-concluded Panchayat Poll.
The BJP-AGP alliance in the Panchayat election had a huge margin in combination rather than the divided opposition camp, i.e., Congress, Asom Jatiya Parishad, Raijor Dal and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The all-time election-mode political party Bharatiya Janata Party a.k.a. BJP’s state wing and its leadership are also hyperactive in election politics.
The Rabha Hasong Election which concluded before Rongali Bihu had a clear mandate for the BJP-led NDA.
The NDA alliance won 33 seats out of 36, making the tally for BJP brighter and making the opposition camp nervous.
Panchayat elections held on May 2 and May 7 once again gave victory to the BJP-led alliance.
The clear mandate from the people of Assam enthused the leaderships of BJP Assam Pradesh so much that they are now set their target of 104 out of 126 in the 2026 Assembly Election.
The win in Zila Parishad seats for BJP has boosted the confidence of the party to announce that it may go solo in the BTC election as well as the 2026 Assembly Election.
So far, the BJP-led alliance has won the maximum number of Zila Parishad seats in all districts of Assam, defeating Congress and other opposition parties.
In Sibsagar, out of 12 Zila Parishad seats, BJP won 11 and AGP won 1 seat; in Jorhat, out of 16 Zila Parishad seats, BJP won 15 seats and AGP won 1 seat; in Biswanath, BJP won all 12 seats; in Tinsukia, out of 22 Zila Parishad seats, BJP won 21 seats and AGP won 1 seat; in Nagaon, out of 27 Zila Parishad seats, BJP won 14 seats and Congress won 13 seats; in Sreebhumi, out of 16 Zila Parishad seats, BJP won 11 seats and Congress won 5 seats. It is surprising to see the rise of BJP in Dhubri, as the party has won 5 Zila Parishad seats from its previous stint of only 1 out of 20 Zila Parishad seats.
The results of Jorhat and Sibsagar are quite surprising. The aura of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, which was in relevance during Lok Sabha polls in 2024, has now completely changed. The change of mood against Congress in the Jorhat constituency is worrisome and needs to be addressed.
Meanwhile, Akhil Gogoi’s presence is also diminishing in Sibsagar constituency, however, Raijor Dal managed to win 3 Zila Parishad seats in Lakhimpur, Darrang and Dhubri districts and 19 Anchalik Parishad seats. The tally may increase after final results.
Another opposition camp, the Asom Jatiya Parishad, under the leadership of Lurinjyoti Gogoi, did play safe in the Panchayat polls and managed to win one Anchalik Parishad seat and 22 Gram Panchayat seats.
The Panchayat Election is a ground-based election involving the masses in true sense. The Panchayat results and thumping majority of BJP-led NDA is a positive sign for the ruling party, however, for the opposition parties, it’s now quite an uphill task!
In Assam, the total seats include 21,920 Gram Panchayat members with 10,883 seats reserved for women. Voting also happened for 2,192 Anchalik Panchayat members with 1,124 reserved for women and 397 Zila Parishad members with 199 seats reserved for women.
On the other hand, 2,912 candidates have won uncontested, out of which 34 Zila Parishad members, 311 Anchalik Panchayat members and 2,567 are Gram Panchayat members.
