Bhandara Boat Capsize: 2 Youths Drown In Maharashtra’s Wainganga River
Two men lost their lives in the Bhandara boat capsize tragedy in Maharashtra. The incident occurred late Sunday night (June 7, 2026).
According to reports, two young men lost their lives after a boat carrying a group of friends overturned in the Wainganga River in Maharashtra’s Bhandara district, prompting a search and rescue operation by local authorities.
Reportedly, seven friends were travelling in a small boat across a stretch of the river when the incident occurred.
Quoting police officials, the media reported that the vessel capsized midstream, throwing all the occupants into the water.
Five of the passengers managed to swim to safety, while two others disappeared in the river’s deep waters.
Rescue teams, assisted by local police and emergency personnel, launched an operation soon after receiving information about the accident.
The missing youths were later found dead, officials said on Monday (June 8, 2026).
Their identities had not been officially released at the time of reporting.
Visuals from the scene showed police personnel and rescue workers stationed along the riverbank as the search operation continued through the night.
Residents also gathered near the site following the accident.
Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the capsize.
It remains unclear whether the boat was overloaded or whether any of the passengers were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.
An investigation has been initiated to establish the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
The accident has once again highlighted concerns over safety standards on inland waterways in Maharashtra.
Bhandara district, which is criss-crossed by rivers and reservoirs, has witnessed several boating mishaps in recent years, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and mandatory use of life-saving equipment on small vessels.
Officials said further details would be released after completion of the inquiry and verification of witness statements.
