Cycle Ride Marks World Environment Day Celebrations In Guwahati

June 5, 2025

World Environment Day is a powerful reminder to pause and reflect on the colour green—the colour of life, balance, and renewal.

It is not just about trees and forests; it is about the choices we make every day that impact our environment. Green represents the lungs of our planet, the spaces we retreat to for peace, and the hope of a healthier tomorrow.

Green soothes our eyes, green gives us respiratory relief, we escape to green always. But why?

Green is the colour of trees, green is the colour of nature, and we all read the story called How Green Was My Valley?

In this fast-changing world, where nature often takes a back seat to human ambition, World Environment Day serves as a reminder that the health of our planet lies in our hands.

On the occasion of World Environment Day on Thursday, (June 5, 2025), Kreeda Bharati organised a special event themed Plogging (Cleaning Drive) & Plantation Programme.

Held at Borsola Udyan near Keshav Dham, the event featured a 3-kilometre cycle ride, a clean-up drive, and a plantation activity—all aimed at raising environmental consciousness among the city's residents.

Over hundred individuals participated in the initiative, which was conducted in collaboration with ESAF Foundation, WWF, and Rooftop Green Multipurpose Co-operative Society Limited (RGMCSL).

The event not only promoted eco-friendly practices but also celebrated the spirit of community-led environmental stewardship.

One of the highlights of the event was the felicitation of 70-year-old Lachit Deka, who defies age by cycling 100 to 150 kilometres and running 30 kilometres daily. His commitment to fitness and the environment earned him special recognition from Kreeda Bharati.

The organisation also honoured Shambhu Yadav, Deputy Director of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), for his contributions to the field.

Several distinguished personalities were present to lend their support, including Bicycle Mayor Arshel Akhter; Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for Assam & Arunachal Pradesh State Office; Barsa Baruah from ESAF Foundation; Shayesta Parween, President of RGMCSL; Manoj Mahanty, North East Zone Organising Secretary of Kreeda Bharati; Alok Tripathi, General Secretary of the Assam Kabaddi Association and Joint Secretary of Kreeda Bharati; Raja Choudhary, Railway Badminton Coach and Vice President of Kreeda Bharati Guwahati Mahanagar; and renowned cyclist Kaushik Guha, who serves as Vice President of Kreeda Bharati and Advisor to the Assam Cycling Community.

As the green wheels rolled through the streets of Guwahati, the message was clear—protecting the planet is not a once-a-year activity, but a daily responsibility.

Let June 5 not be a fleeting date on the calendar, but a call to action—because the Earth’s future is, indeed, our call.

In a world rapidly changing due to human actions, June 5 calls us to reconnect with nature and take responsibility. From planting trees to reducing plastic use, every small step matters.

Let us not wait for disasters to wake us up. World Environment Day is not just a celebration—it is a call to action to embrace green living and protect our only home, Earth.
