The much anticipated Diphu Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) will start functioning from Monday (November 25).
This was informed DMCH principal-cum-chief superintendent Dr Sumitra Hagjer.
Dr Hagjer was interacting with scribes on Thursday after the inauguration of the Out Patient Department (OPD) in DMCH premises on Thursday.
"The OPD will remain open from 8 am to 2 pm," Dr Hagjer said.
"However, emergency services and services for critical cases will be available at Diphu Civil Hospital (DCH) as of now," Dr Hagjer added.
Dr Hagjer further informed that the DMC will become a full-fledged hospital in a phased manner.
"In the first phase the OPD will be introduced and in the second phase indoor patients from DCH will be shifted to DMCH," Dr Hagjer added.
"In the final phase, operation theatres and laboratories will become operational at DMCH," further said Dr Hagjer.
The new medical college-cum hospital will be of immense help to the people of Karbi Anglong district and the nearby areas.
"A full-fledged hospital was the need of the hour for the people of Karbi Anglong," said Samson Difousa while talking to The Story Mug.
"With the opening of Diphu Medical College and Hospital, this dream is going to be fulfilled soon" he added.
Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that faculties of DMCH will get an additional 25 per cent of basic salary as an incentive.
"The DMCH faculties will get an additional 25 per cent of their basic salary as an incentive,” Sarma said addressing the media on Wednesday.
"The incentive is given to retain the faculty members in tough terrain like Diphu," he added.
"If any retired professor wants to join the institute, then he will be able to serve till 70-years of age," the health minister reiterated.
"Besides, if a faculty member works in DMCH for three years during any period of his entire career, his retirement age will be 67 years," he added.
The existing retirement age limit for faculties in medical colleges is 65 years,” he added.
"These benefits will be applicable only to the faculty members, who will mostly be from outside Karbi Anglong," Sarma added.
So far, 57 out of 58 faculty members have joined the Diphu Medical College and Hospital and most of them belong to places outside Karbi Anglong.
Assam will soon have three more medical colleges which are presently under construction.
The three medical colleges are at Dhubri, Lakhimpur and Nagaon and all of them will start functioning from 2020-21 season.
