Dr. Lakshahira Das, a distinguished Assamese litterateur, poet, and cultural icon, passed away early on March 15, 2025, morning at 94.
Born in Sualkuchi to Late Lalit Chandra Vaishya Saud and Late Dhairjya Bala Vaishya Saud on February 13, 1931, Lakshahira Das exhibited literary talent from a young age, composing her first poem when she was only 6-year-old.
Her initial collection of lyrics was published in 1950 during her time at Cotton College.
Throughout her illustrious career, Lakshahira Das made significant contributions to Assamese literature and culture.
She has authored over 50 books, encompassing poetry, short stories, children's literature, translations, and educational texts.
Her works have been featured in various anthologies, including 'Modern Assamese Poetry' and 'New Voices of Indian Poetry.'

In addition to her literary achievements, Dr. Das has been an influential educator.
She served as the first professor and head of the Department of Education at Cotton College from 1957 to 1977, authoring 14 academic books and mentoring a host of PhD scholars.
Dr. Das continues to write, drawing inspiration from her mentors and experiences.
She regards Dr. Bhupen Hazarika as a significant influence on her work.

Her contributions have been recognized with numerous accolades, such as the 'Best Playback Singer of Assamese Film' in 1968, the 'Basanti Bordoloi Award' in 1995, and the 'Silipi Puraskar' from the Government of Assam in 2003.
Her son, Anirban Das, is also a popular ghazal singer who has crafted a name for himself in the music industry.
Her death has left behind an irreplaceable void in the world of Assamese literature.
Her death has been mourned by people from across the state.
