Erosion In Assam Accorded As Natural Calamity

Assam government has taken special steps for solving flood and erosion problem, said Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday.

"The state government has already requested the 15th Finance Commission for considering erosion as a natural calamity," Sonowal added.

"The government has requested the commission for adequate compensatory measures towards relief and rehabilitation of erosion-hit people," he said.

Responding to Assam government’s request, the 15th Finance Commission accorded river erosion as a natural calamity.

It has also recommended for adequate compensation including rehabilitation under State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).

Sonowal further said that the Centre has asked the State to submit a detailed report incorporating the details of those victims in the state who rendered landless and homeless due to erosion.

"The state government is preparing a detailed report for the same to be submitted to the Centre," Sonowal said.

He also exuded confidence, this would ultimately bring to an end to the long-pending problem that the people of Assam have been going through owning to erosion.

"People of Assam at present are fighting against various calamities like COVID-19, flood, cyclone and African Swine Fever," Sonowal said.

"The government is putting up a brave front against these problems with the help of the people and different state government departments," he added.

"Strict instructions have been given to water resources department to repair the breaches in the embankments so that the embankments sustain their capacity as a deterrent to flooding," the CM added.

"Even though COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdown hampered the progress of the repairing work, during relaxation, the government agency has undertaken repair and protection work on full throttle," he further said.
