Gaurav Gogoi Raises Alarm Over Environmental Impact Of Assam Infrastructure Projects

The Jorhat Lok Sabha MP urges Assam government to reassess Noonmati-Chandmari flyover plans

September 27, 2024

Jorhat Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi has voiced serious concerns regarding the environmental repercussions of the proposed Digholi Pukhuri-Noonmati flyover in Guwahati, along with two other significant infrastructure projects in Assam.

In a letter addressed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Gaurav Gogoi highlighted the potential challenges these projects pose to local communities and the environment.

He specifically pointed out the extensive tree felling required for the flyover in the Chandmari area, warning that such deforestation could worsen air pollution, lead to unplanned flooding, and diminish the region’s green cover.

"Gogoi called for an environmental impact assessment (EIA) and urged the government to consult with environmental experts and local communities to ensure sustainable and responsible development," a press communiqué stated.

Additionally, Gogoi addressed the stalled construction of the Jorhat-Majuli bridge over the Brahmaputra River, attributing the delays to contractor disputes and alleged mismanagement.

He also expressed concerns over the proposed flyover on AT Road in Jorhat, emphasising the risk of displacing shopkeepers and disrupting the local economy.

"He called for a reconsideration of the project’s design and location to minimise its impact on businesses and community life," the release added.

Gogoi’s appeal underscores the need for a balanced approach to development, prioritising both progress and environmental sustainability.
