In a significant breakthrough, Guwahati Police on December 9, 2024, dismantled an inter-state vehicle theft gang, apprehending six individuals and recovering stolen motorcycles.
The operation, led by the Garchuk police station, unfolded across Assam and Meghalaya, extending to areas near the India-Bangladesh border.
Speaking about the operation to the media, Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah revealed that the investigation began following a tip-off from a reliable source.
Acting swiftly, the Garchuk police team apprehended three seasoned motorcycle thieves identified as Md Abdul Hanif Seikh (32), Md Rafiq Ali (30), and Md Jakir Hussain (27).
"Based on the confessions of the apprehended suspects, the team coordinated with Meghalaya Police to conduct a follow-up raid in Jowai, Meghalaya," Barah said.
"This led to the arrest of three more individuals, who not only stole but also received stolen vehicles. The suspects, identified as Dibormi Amrynsong (26), Tunadahun Matra (25), and Rimiki Suchiag (22), were captured near the Bangladesh border," he added
The investigation yielded further successes as police recovered three stolen motorcycles — one from Jowai Bypass and two from Karkhana village under Muktapur police station, close to the international border.
The police also seized a cache of burglary tools, including three master keys, an iron cutter, and a hand saw, from the suspects.
"These tools indicate the professional nature of the gang’s activities," Barah added.
With further inquiries underway, this operation marks a decisive step in combating organised vehicle theft in the region.
