Iconic Kelvin Cinema Reopens In Guwahati

Iconic Kelvin Cinema Makes A Grand Comeback In Guwahati

December 5, 2025

Kelvin Cinema, one of Assam’s most historic and iconic theatres, has marked a major comeback with the launch of a contemporary two-screen multiplex.

Rechristened as Kelvin Gold Cinema, the relaunch brings a fresh chapter to the landmark establishment, which first opened in 1935 in the Tokobari area in Assam-Trunk Road, Guwahati.

The new multiplex, developed within the original Kelvin Cinema compound, offers a combined seating capacity of 499, including 24 premium recliners. With a sleek design and state-of-the-art technology, the venue blends nostalgia with modernity as it repositions itself for today’s cinema-going audience.

Kelvin Gold Cinema was inaugurated on December 3, 2025 (Wednesday) evening in the presence of NEDFi CMD PVSLN Murty, film trade analyst Komal Nahta, and a host of leading figures from Assamese cinema including Ravi Sarma, Zerifa Wahid, Pranjal Saikia, Purnima Pathak Saikia, Manjula Barua, Manju Borah, Mridula Baruah, Jahnu Barua, Seema Biswas, Manisha Hazarika, Rima Das, Kopil Bora, and journalist and author Padma Shri Patricia Mukhim.

Founded by Jeevanram Goenka, Kelvin Cinema soon emerged as a cultural hub, screening Assamese film premieres, long-running Hindi hits, and technology-driven formats ahead of their time.

Among its many milestones was a remarkable 53-week run of Jai Santoshi Maa. It was also the first hall in Guwahati to screen English films, drawing crowds for classics such as Ben-Hur and The Ten Commandments.

Shankar Lall Goenka, who has long guided the Kelvin legacy, said the reopening is steeped in sentiment. “Kelvin has lived through the memories of generations.

"Bringing it back in a modern form feels like carrying a legacy forward while creating something new for today’s audience," he said.

"The warm response from young movie lovers and families shows that Kelvin still holds a special place in Guwahati," Goenka added.

Kelvin Gold Cinema is equipped with Christie 2K laser projection, Dolby 7.1 surround sound, Pulz IsoWave audio systems and 3D screening capabilities.

The recliner section offers on-seat food and beverage service, USB charging points and generous legroom. The multiplex also features an expanded food and drinks menu, with both indulgent and healthier options.

Improved parking and convenient access aim to attract filmgoers from across the city.

Gold Cinema Director Ratan Jain said the venue seeks to recreate a "royal movie experience" for Guwahati audiences, while fellow director Hasmukh Shah noted that the focus was on building an urban entertainment space that reflects contemporary tastes.

Tickets for Kelvin Gold Cinema are available through the Gold Cinema website, its mobile apps, and BookMyShow.
