John Prine, Legendary American Singer, Dies Of Coronavirus

John Prine, the legendary American country-folk singer-songwriter, passed away on Tuesday of COVID-19 complications at the age of 73.

Prine, who is considered as one of the most revolutionary folk singers, survived multiple bouts with cancer as well.

The 73-year-old Prine died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. His death was announced by his family.

John Prine broke into the folk music scene in 1971 with his self-titled debut album 'Prine'.

Since then he was hailed by the music critics and his contemporaries for his keen observational powers, sarcasm he portrayed through his songs.

The legendary singer was hospitalised on March 26 in Nashville after he showed COVID-19 symptoms.

Prine was also diagnosed for heart ailments before he was hospitalised, apart from been treated for throat cancer in 1998 and lung cancer in 2013.

Even though the cancer treatment affected his singing immensely, yet he continued to tour around the world until 2019.

In a statement on social media, his family members said, “This is hard news for us to share. But so many of you have loved and supported John over the years, we wanted to let you know, and give you the chance to send on more of that love and support now. And know that we love you, and John loves you.”

The family further informed that Prine showed coronavirus symptoms all of a sudden and he was intubated on March 29.

John Prine, earlier this year, was given the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 62nd Grammy Awards ceremony.

In his lifetime, Prine was nominated for 11 Grammys and he won the coveted award twice.

In 2019, he was elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

John Prine was among the favourite songwriters of legendary singer and songwriter Bob Dylan.

In a 2009 interview, Dylan while speaking about Prine said, "Prine’s stuff is pure Proustian existentialism. Midwestern mind-trips to the Nth degree. And he writes beautiful songs."

John Prine is the second legendary musician to have died of coronavirus.

Last week legendary jazz pianist and teacher Ellis Marsalis Jr (85) passed away due to complications of coronavirus.
