A woman from Kairana in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district was found murdered and her body abandoned in bushes in Indri, Karnal, police said on Thursday, August 21, 2025.
Investigators have arrested her brother and a cousin in connection with the killing; a court in Karnal remanded both suspects to two days of police custody.
The body was discovered on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, morning by passers-by along the Garhi Birbal–Umarpur road in Indri, who alerted local police. Officers said the deceased was later identified as a resident of Kairana.
Indri station-house officer Vipin Kumar told reporters that forensic teams and investigators attended the scene and that early enquiries produced leads pointing towards family members.
Police said the two accused were arrested in Shamli and brought to Karnal for questioning before being produced before a magistrate.
There are conflicting reports about the victim’s age: some news outlets quoted police sources saying the woman was “around 20”, while other reports described her as a 17-year-old.
Authorities have not issued a detailed public statement on the victim’s identity or age pending formal family notifications and forensic results.
Karnal police said the case is being treated as a homicide and that post-mortem and forensic examinations are under way to establish the cause of death and collect evidence.
The accused are expected to be questioned further while investigators reconstruct the movements of the victim and the timeline of events leading to her death.
The arrests have prompted appeals from local officials for calm and for the public to allow police to complete their probe.
As the investigation continues, further details — including motive and any additional charges — are likely to be revealed once forensic and legal formalities are completed.
