Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand Singh Visits Ukhrul To Promote Dialogue Amid Ethnic Tensions

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, on April 17, 2026, Friday, visited villages in Ukhrul district as part of efforts to ease tensions between the Kuki and Tangkhul Naga communities following recent violence.

During interactions with residents, Singh said most people, particularly ordinary citizens and children, seek peace and stability.

He emphasised that dialogue is essential to restoring normalcy and warned that continued conflict would have long-term consequences for younger generations.

At Thawai Kuki Village, the Chief Minister met a woman who became emotional while recounting her experience. Singh said he understood her distress and described the interaction as deeply affecting.

Clashes between the Kuki and Tangkhul Naga communities in February at Litan Sareikhong, reportedly linked to territorial disputes, led to the burning of over 30 houses.

Similar incidents in other hill districts have heightened concerns about ongoing instability.

Appealing for restraint, Singh urged community leaders to guide people towards reconciliation and to prioritise the future of children over present grievances.

He also addressed local development issues, assuring residents that efforts would be made to resume regular school activities.

He confirmed that a bridge project has been included in the government’s plans and said drinking water supply would be taken up on priority upon his return to Imphal.

In Sharkaphung, a Tangkhul Naga village, the Chief Minister was welcomed by local leaders and residents.

He stressed the importance of dialogue in resolving conflicts and urged elected representatives to facilitate discussions between communities.

He also directed officials to examine the feasibility of constructing a bridge to improve connectivity, assuring that the project would be taken up within the year.

Earlier, Singh stopped at Shangkai, Shokvao and Ramva villages along the Imphal–Ukhrul road.

Residents in Shangkai raised concerns about the lack of potable water, while those in Shokvao highlighted issues with development works.

At Ramva, villagers called for improvements to local roads. The Chief Minister assured that these concerns would be addressed.

Officials from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited briefed Singh on the progress of the Imphal–Ukhrul–Jessami road project and the challenges faced. He said the issues would be reviewed with senior officials.

At Ukhrul district headquarters, Singh was received by the district administration, civil society organisations and local representatives.

He was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dilkho, Tourism Minister Khuraijam Loken Singh and other officials.

The visit concluded with an inspection of preparations for the Shirui Lily Festival 2026 at Shirui village.
