A proposal to construct a museum chronicling the life of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Agartala was made by Bangladesh Minister of Information Dr Hasan Mahmud.
The proposal was made to Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb when the two leaders met on Monday to discuss a plethora of issues on the sidelines of an event.
The proposal has been dubbed as a fresh attempt to strengthen the bilateral relations between Tripura and Bangladesh.
Mahmud further expressed his desire to construct a war memorial in Tripura in memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the independence of Bangladesh.
The minister was in Agartala to inaugurate a three-day film festival, in which 20 films made on Bangladesh liberation war will be screened.
Dr Mahmud further said that over the years the ties between Bangladesh and Tripura have only got better.
Recalling Tripura's role in the Bangladesh liberation war, he said, "Tripura's help during the liberation war can never be forgotten."
Sources informed that the Tripura CM responded "positively" to both the proposals of a museum after Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the war memorial commemorating the heroes of Bangladesh Liberation War.
It is worth mentioning here that during the liberation war of Bangladesh, Tripura played a pivotal role.
Tripura, a union territory in 1971, had unsealed its borders allowing an estimated 13 lakh refugees from erstwhile East Pakistan to take refuge in various parts of the state.
Sabroom, Belonia, Melaghar, Udaipur, Bishramganj and Mohanpur are some of the many places where Bangladeshi refugees set-up camp after fleeing from the country.
Moreover, Tripura was one of the first to speak out on Operation Searchlight and the massacres that took place in East Pakistan.
Not just politically, but Tripura went out all guns blazing from every front to aid Bangladesh to attain independence.
From doctors to the press- Bangladesh was helped by Tripura in every front.
A number of people from Tripura also sacrificed their lives during the war.
