First electric locomotive of Assam

NFR Test Runs First Electric Locomotive In Assam

February 19, 2021

Assam scripted its name in history books on February 18 when Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) had the trial run of the first-ever electric locomotive of the northeast.

The locomotive ran from Bongaigaon and Sarupeta.

Meanwhile, the NFR in a tweet informed that the electrification is expected to reach Guwahati by March 21.

"History was created today when the first Electric locomotive ran on the soil of Assam during a trial run between Bongaigaon and Sarupeta. Electrification is expected to reach Guwahati by March 21," the NFR tweeted.

Minister of Railways Piyush Goyal also tweeted about the test run and said that it was a matter of great pride not just for Assam, but India as a whole.

"Creating an Aatmanirbhar Assam: For the first time in history, the electric locomotive ran on the soil of Assam with a successful trial run from Bongaigaon to Sarupeta stations," the minister tweeted.

It may be mentioned here that the NFR is working day in and day out to complete the electrification between New Bongaigaon and Rangia stations at the earliest.

"If things go as planned, then electric trains will be plying between New Bongaigaon and Rangia from March this year," reported sentinelassam.com quoting NF Railway PRO Nripen Bhattacharyya.

It is worth mentioning here that the Indian Railways is working for the 100 per cent electrification of its network.

In July last year, the 05956/55 Delhi-Dibrugarh Brahmaputra Mail became the first North Frontier Railway owned train to run on electric traction from Delhi to New Jalpaiguri Jn, instead of Din Dayal Upadhyaya Jn, thus saving Rs 20.4 crore annually.
