Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on January 7, 2025, announced that the Indian government remains vigilant regarding China’s plan to construct a massive dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet, near the border with India.
This statement comes days after China revealed its intention to build the world’s largest dam on the river, raising concerns about its potential impact on downstream regions.
India has reaffirmed its commitment to closely monitor developments and take necessary measures to safeguard its interests.
The government has also urged Beijing to ensure that the interests of downstream states relying on the Brahmaputra are not adversely affected by upstream activities.
"The Indian government is on alert," Singh stated during an event in Agra when questioned about the project.
It may be mentioned here that in December 2024, China approved plans to construct a dam over the Brahmaputra River, referred to as the Yarlung Zangbo in Tibet, near the Indian border.
According to the proposed plans, the dam is to be built at a significant gorge in the Himalayan region where the Brahmaputra takes a sharp U-turn before flowing into Arunachal Pradesh and subsequently into Bangladesh.
In its initial response to the proposed dam on Brahmaputra, India on January 3, 2025, called upon China to ensure that the interests of the downstream states of the Brahmaputra River are not adversely affected by activities undertaken in the upstream regions.
Minister's Agra Visit
Singh was in Agra to attend the 57th State-level conference of the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shikshak Sangh, held at the Mufeed-e-Aam Inter College.
Upon his arrival at around noon, he was welcomed by students with a rendition of Saraswati Vandana.
In his address, the Defence Minister highlighted India’s growing influence on the global stage, stating, "Earlier, people did not take it seriously when India spoke at international forums, but now, when India speaks, the world listens."
He also noted the country’s economic progress, mentioning, "India’s economy, which was previously ranked 11th globally, is now the fifth largest. In the next two and a half years, it will be among the top three economies."
Focus On Defence And Education
Singh emphasised India’s strides towards self-reliance in defence, citing advancements in technology and innovation.
Turning his attention to the teaching fraternity, he urged educators to shape the future of students and contribute to the nation’s development.
Recalling his tenure as Uttar Pradesh’s Education Minister during the Kalyan Singh government, Singh spoke about the Anti-Copying Act.
He shared how implementing the law brought immense pressure and political losses but asserted that he prioritised the welfare of students over political gains.
The Defence Minister’s remarks reflect India’s proactive stance on regional challenges while showcasing the country’s aspirations for growth and self-reliance.
