Tragic Death Of Fearless Journalist Mukesh Chandrakar Shocks Chhattisgarh

January 4, 2025

In a harrowing discovery that has sent ripples through the journalism fraternity and the wider community, the body of independent journalist Mukesh Chandrakar, missing since New Year’s Day, was found in a septic tank on January 3, 2025, evening in Chattanpara Basti, Bijapur, Chhattisgarh.

Mukesh Chandrakar, a contributing reporter for NDTV and a well-known voice on regional issues, was identified by his clothes.

His body, found in a septic tank that had been freshly sealed with concrete, bore multiple injuries to the head and back, indicating foul play.

Acting on his last known mobile location, the police traced him to the property of a contractor, Suresh Chandrakar, where the gruesome discovery was made.

Superintendent of Police Jitendra Yadav confirmed the investigation is underway, with several individuals, including the contractor, being questioned.

"We are probing whether Mukesh’s death is linked to any of his recent reporting. Those responsible will be apprehended soon," NDTV reported quoting Yadav.

Mukesh Chandrakar, who also managed a successful YouTube channel, Bastar Junction, boasting 1,60,000 subscribers, was celebrated for his fearless reporting on sensitive issues in the Bastar region.

His work often highlighted underreported challenges and injustices faced by local communities, earning him both admiration and enemies.

In April 2021, Mukesh played a pivotal role in securing the release of CRPF CoBRA commando Rakeshwar Singh Manhas, who had been kidnapped by Maoists, further cementing his reputation as a journalist committed to truth and justice.

The Chandrakar brothers, Mukesh and Yukesh, both journalists, had built their careers through mutual support after losing their parents at a young age.

Mukesh’s disappearance on January 1, 2025, sparked immediate concern, as he left home wearing a T-shirt and shorts, and his phone was switched off soon after.

His brother Yukesh searched tirelessly before filing a missing person report, only for his worst fears to be realised days later.

The discovery has devastated Mukesh’s family and the community.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed his condolences and vowed justice.

"The news of the murder of Bijapur’s young and dedicated journalist Mukesh Chandrakar ji is extremely sad and heartbreaking. His loss is irreparable. I have instructed authorities to ensure the criminals are swiftly apprehended and face the harshest punishment," the Chief Minister posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The tragic death of Mukesh Chandrakar has once again highlighted the risks faced by journalists, particularly those covering sensitive issues in conflict-ridden regions.

His legacy as a fearless reporter who gave a voice to the voiceless will not be forgotten.
