Streaming platforms provide a platform for meaningful cinema

Streaming Platforms: The Only Support For Distinctive Indian Cinema

March 2, 2025

In recent years, the film industry has witnessed a remarkable shift, driven by the rise of streaming platforms that have become a haven for low-budget and niche films.

Two Hindi films released this month on the streaming platforms— Arati Kadav’s Mrs. (Zee5) and Boman Irani’s The Mehta Boys (Prime Video) — once again exemplify how these services are redefining film distribution by providing a space for such films.

Far from being mere alternatives to mainstream releases, these platforms are now essential in fostering creative  expression and reaching audiences beyond conventional theatrical circuits.

One of the most significant advantages of streaming platforms is their ability to empower filmmakers with creative freedom. Unlike traditional studios that often prioritise commercial viability over artistic risk, OTT services allow independent storytellers to explore bold narratives and create films made with limited financial resources.

Films like Mrs. and The Mehta Boys demonstrate how streaming platforms serve as incubators for originality,  enabling filmmakers to craft nuanced stories without the pressures of box office expectations. As a result, audiences gain access to fresh, thought-provoking content that challenges storytelling conventions and broadens the scope of Indian cinema.

Mrs. is a remake of Jeo Baby’s The Great Indian Kitchen (Malayalam, 2021) and centres around Richa (Sanya Malhotra), a trained dancer and dance instructor who gets married and is introduced to a family where men call the shots and women are expected to conform to traditional roles.

The film explores the emotional and physical toll of domestic labor, the stifling expectations placed on women, and Richa’s journey toward reclaiming her identity.

Meanwhile, The Mehta Boys narrates the bittersweet relationship between a father and son, where generational conflicts, unspoken emotions, and unresolved tensions come to the surface. The film delves into themes of vulnerability and familial bonds as the two navigate their evolving relationship, grappling with love, disappointment, and acceptance.

What is unique in both films is that they share a common thread: they do not follow the conventional structure of melodramatic storytelling. There are no sugar-coated or hyperbolic moments; instead, they offer viewers stories that reflect the complexities of contemporary society.

Both films are social dramas that do not adhere to formulaic tropes or exaggerated emotional beats. Instead, they rely on nuanced character development and restrained storytelling to make a lasting impact, reaffirming that
compelling storytelling remains at the heart of cinema’s enduring appeal.

At a time when mainstream cinema is dominated by franchise films and formulaic storytelling, films like Mrs. and The Mehta Boys on streaming platforms offer a refreshing alternative.

Today, the Hindi film industry is sustaining itself by re-releasing blockbusters from yesteryears, banking on nostalgia rather than investing in fresh narratives. This trend underscores the growing creative stagnation in mainstream filmmaking, making the role of streaming platforms even more crucial.

By championing bold, socially relevant, and unconventional stories, these platforms are not just filling a gap but also redefining what Indian cinema can be in the digital age.

The role of streaming platforms in supporting artistic vision and creative expression in cinema is undeniable. By  championing creativity, diversity, and new talent, these services are reshaping the film industry, proving that there is a thriving audience for stories that push boundaries and celebrate artistic expression.
