West Bengal Speeds Up Border Security Push, Gives 142 Acres To BSF
The West Bengal government has handed over 142.79 acres of land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for the construction of border outposts and barbed-wire fencing infrastructure along the India-Bangladesh border, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on May 27, 2026.
The land transfer forms part of the newly elected BJP government’s decision, taken during its first Cabinet meeting on May 11, 2026, to provide nearly 600 acres of land within 45 days for border fencing and related infrastructure projects.
In a post on social media late on May 27, 2026 (Wednesday) night, Adhikari said the state government had “initiated intensified measures” to strengthen border security by facilitating the construction of BSF outposts and fencing in border areas.
“Additional land has now been handed over to BSF, taking the total tally to 142.79 acres,” the Chief Minister wrote.
West Bengal shares a 2,217-km-long border with Bangladesh, the longest international border shared by any Indian state.
According to officials, nearly 1,600 km of the border has already been fenced, while several stretches remain uncovered, particularly in riverine and densely populated areas, The New Indian Express reported.
The move comes weeks after the BJP government assumed office in the state.
During its first Cabinet meeting, the government announced a series of measures aimed at strengthening coordination with the Centre, including expedited land transfer for border fencing projects that had remained pending for years.
Earlier this month, a high-level meeting was also held at Nabanna between senior state officials and BSF Director General Praveen Kumar to discuss land transfer and fencing work in key border districts, including Nadia, North 24 Parganas, Malda-Murshidabad and Cooch Behar.
Fencing work has already begun in parts of Siliguri subdivision after portions of land were transferred to the BSF, officials said.
The project is expected to improve surveillance and strengthen security along sensitive stretches of the international border, according to The Times of India.
The issue of border security and illegal infiltration has remained politically sensitive in West Bengal for several years, frequently featuring in exchanges between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress.
